Alameda – Oakland Estuary Bridges Temporary Closure Schedule

Planned Closures in April during Non-Peak Hours for Scheduled Bridge Inspections

The County of Alameda Public Works Agency will be closing traffic lanes on the Miller-Sweeney (Fruitvale) Bridge, Park Street Bridge, and High Street Bridge on different days beginning in April. These bridges are owned and operated by the County of Alameda.

The planned closures are necessary for engineering teams to perform bridge inspections. Alameda County Public Works Agency has been planning this project that affects the High Street, Park Street, and Fruitvale Avenue (Miler-Sweeney) estuary bridges for more than one year, including coordinating with multiple local, state, and federal agencies to gain permission for highly specialized bridge experts to conduct these critical and necessary inspections. These inspections are for the ongoing safety assessment for both day-to-day operations, and for use during an emergency/disaster. The lane closures will be during non-peak hours and at night. Detour signs will be posted. Motorists are advised to please use caution when driving through the area. The schedule of the closures is as follows:

Miller-Sweeny Bridge (connects with Fruitvale Avenue):

  • On Monday, April 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., there will be lane closures. At least one lane will be open with restricted access and traffic control measures in place. Motorists should expect delays.
  • On Tuesday, April 3, lanes will be closed during the day, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Then, later that night, from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., all lanes will be closed. There will be no vehicle access. Motorists should follow the posted detour or choose another way to enter or exit Alameda.

High Street Bridge:

  • From Wednesday, April 4 through Friday, April 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day, all lanes will be closed. There will be no vehicle access. Motorists should follow the posted detour or choose another way to enter or exit Alameda.

Park Street Bridge:

  • From Monday, April 9 through Thursday, April 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day, there will be lane closures. Motorists may only have access to one lane of traffic. On Wednesday night, April 11, all lanes will be closed from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. There will be no vehicle access. Motorists should follow the posted detour or choose another way to enter or exit Alameda.

The inspection work is part of the continued maintenance for the three drawbridges. Detour signs, roadside advisories, and changeable message signs will alert motorists ahead of time to the scheduled work.

The City of Alameda will post alerts at www.alamedaca.gov and on social media. For updates on this project and others, please visit the Public Works Agency’s website at www.acpwa.org. If these closures pose a special hardship, please call Alameda County Public Works Bridge Operations Office at (510) 777-2390. We appreciate your patience and partnership on this critical safety project.
